The costume from Gutach in the Schwarzwald region is by far the most well known national costume of Germany. The straw hat with woolen pompoms is very typical. Unmarried girls wear red pompoms on their hats, married women have black pompoms. This obviously is an unmarried girl accompanied by a male that has bunch of cuckoo clocks on his back, selling them from door to door. Cuckoo clocks are traditionally made in the Schwarzwald area and still are a favourite souvenir. The dolls have vinyl heads and hard plastic bodies and limbs. They are both marked 'HV' in the neck. HV stands for Hans Volk. The female is in excellent condition. The male would be too, if he had not had a little moth 'nibble' along the left front edge of his felt coat (hardly visible). Unfortunately one pendant is missing from the upper left clock. Size 30 cm/12 inches for the male, the female is slightly smaller. A great matching couple combining two Black Forest traditions in one; the costume and the clock making. More pictures below. The postcard shows an example of the real costume and is not included in this sale!
