This is a Hakata Ningyo from Japan, a traditional japanese clay doll. The clay is put in a plaster mold and then baked. The dolls are left unglazed after painting. This one is a boy sitting besides a lantern. He is in excellent condition, no damage at all. There are a few irregularities in the painting, perhaps caused by the fabrication proces or handling. He is a hollow figure with a small hole at the bottom. Size HxW 15 cm/6 inches x 16 cm/6,5 inches. No marks. More pictures below.
